Bernard J. Schmitz, 86, 2269 St. Peter Rd., Fort Recovery, Ohio, died at 5:44 AM at The Gardens at St. Henry, St. Henry, OH.
He was born November 24, 2010, in Crawford County, OH, to the late George Schmitz and the late Blanche Fisher. He married Irma Abels in 1950 and she passed away in 1974. On November 25, 1975, he married Eileen (Rauh) Kaiser who survives.
Other survivors are 2 daughters, Arlene (Ray) Parr of Schaumburg, IL, Pam (Dave) Lange of Coldwater, OH; 2 sons - Dan (Marilyn) Schmitz of Fort Recovery, OH, Todd Schmitz of Pinon Hills, CA; 4 step daughters, Charlene (Milton) Bergman of Fort Recovery, OH, Sue (Sam) Schmiesing of Coldwater, OH, Emma (Tom) Sudhoff of Fort Recovery, OH, Phyllis (Jerry) Macke of Wapakoneta, OH; 3 step sons - Hank (Alice) Kaiser of Celina, OH, Art (Jackie) Kaiser of Celina, OH, John (Deb) Kaiser of Rossburg, OH; brother, Ralph (Alvera) Schmitz of New Weston, OH; 2 sisters - Agnes (Alfred) Heydinger of Jacksonville, FL, Rosemary Riley of Shelby, OH; 32 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; 3 sisters-in-law, Delores Schmitz, St. Henry, OH, Hilda Schmitz, Rossburg, OH, and Ann Schmitz, Versailles, OH.
Deceased are 2 grandchildren, 4 brothers, Edgar, Paul, Robert, and Cletus Schmitz,and a sister, Rita Boeckman.
He was employed at the former Avco New Idea, Coldwater, OH and as a farmer.
He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII on the USS Yorktown CVS-10 in the Pacific. He was a former member of St. Peter Catholic Church and is a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Joe, OH. He was a member of the American Legion Post 345, Fort Recovery and the Holy Name Society of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Services are 10:30 AM Saturday, November 27, 2010 at St. Peter Catholic Church, the Rev. Thomas Dorn officiating. Burial is at St. Peter Cemetery. Calling is Friday, 2:00 pm - 8:00 pm & Saturday, 9:00 am - 9:45 am at Brockman - Boeckman Funeral Home, Fort Recovery, Ohio.
Contributions can be made to preservation of the USS Yorktown CVS-10. Military graveside honors will be conducted by the American Legion.
